The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has approved the purchase of Shaws from Sainsbury by Albertsons for a reported $2.48 billion.
The deal is expected to close by the end of June.
The acquisition of Shaws’ 202 stores in New England was seen as not creating any antitrust issues because Albertsons doesn’t have a presence in that region of the country. The purchase will give Albertsons more than 2,500 units nationwide.

Shaws is second to Ahold’s Stop & Shop in New England, so it fills Albertsons’ apparent desire to make sure it is either first or second in any market it serves.
But now that it looks like Albertsons is going to own it, let’s see what it is going to do with it. Because just owning it isn’t enough…let’s see some innovation, some energy, some magic.
Otherwise, quite frankly, we’re gonna be disappointed.
