The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that in the tough Cincinnati marketplace, where Kroger is about to face-off with heightened competition from Wal-Mart, Supervalu’s Bigg’s chain – the number three food retailer in the market, behind Kroger and Meijer – is girding itself for the onslaught.
But it isn’t just playing defense. Bigg’s, which operates supercenters that combine groceries with a discount department store (and was doing so before Wal-Mart did), also is licensing Supervalu’s Save-A-Lot format, small, limited assortment, “extreme discount” units that it believes will take the edge off the competition.

Smart move. Too many retailers do more of the same to compete, or try to play by the rules established by the new competition.
But Supervalu and Bigg’s, by taking a different tack, offer a real alternative to the consumer.
