The Washington Post reports this morning that negotiators for Safeway and Ahold-owned Giant Food have come to a tentative agreement with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) for a contract that would have existing employees paying more for prescriptions, with annual deductibles going from $100 to $200. New employees will pay a larger share of their health care costs, and less generous pay on Sundays and holidays, according to the Post.
Some 18,000 employees are scheduled to vote on the agreement today. All of the stores operated by the two chains in the Washington area will be closed from 7 am to 3 pm so the unionized workers can vote on the deal.

- Expect ratification. Nobody needs a repeat of the Southern California fiasco.
