The San Jose Mercury News reports this morning that The Gilroy, California, city council has approved a plan to build a Wal-Mart Supercenter within the city limits.
It should open in about a year.
As reported yesterday on MNB, Gilroy will be the first community in Northern California's Bay Area to have a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Thje city counciol responded to the fact that Wal-Mart is promising 240 new jobs to a communityb where there is an 11 percent unemployment rate.

- As we said yesterday, it'll be interesting to check back with Gilroy in a year or two and see if other businesses have had to lay off workers because of Wal-Mart's entry, and what it means in terms of the net increase - or decrease - in jobs there.
