business news in context, analysis with attitude

The UK's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has approved Tesco's acquisition of 45 small supermarkets from Administore, a move that will broaden Tesco's presence in the small store and c-store category.

This move by the nation's top grocer is part of a trend there that has supermarket chains investing in the c-store segment, apparently positioning themselves for a long, drawn-out competition that will hinge on price, selection and convenience.

Tesco already has its Tesco Express stores in the UK, which have traditionally offered convenient locations with dense selection and advertised "superstore prices."
KC's View:
We love this move. C-stores, it seems to us, are the battleground upon which many competitive battles both in the UK and US will be fought.
