The Columbus Dispatch reports that Dunkin' Donuts has told the US Bankruptcy Court that it wants an opportunity to bid against Wendy's Tim Hortons chain to acquire New England's 48-store Bess Eaton Coffee and Bake Shops.
A deal that would have the bankrupt Bess Eaton bought by Tim Hortons was announced last week, but an entry into the fray by Dunkin' Donuts could raise the competitive stakes, not to mention the price of the chain. Honey Dew Donuts, a 151-unit Massachusetts-based chain, reportedly is considering a bid.
Dunkin' Donuts has 4,200 coffee shops across the United States, including more than 1,000 in New England. Tim Hortons has 2,343 coffee-and-baked goods stores in Canada and 184 in the United States.
