The Federal government has initiated a criminal investigation into the nation's first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), better known as mad cow disease. The focus of the probe is whether records may have been falsified in reporting on how the discovery of mad cow took place.

Recent testimony from a Washington State slaughterhouse employee suggested that consumers may not have gotten the whole story about the first discovery of mad cow disease on US soil - and that, in fact, finding it may have been more of a fluke than an example of the system working the way it should.

This should be interesting. Very little that has been said by the authorities in this case has struck us as being convincing. We won't be surprised by anything.
