Natural/organics retailer Wild Oats Markets announced it has removed all products containing hydrogenated oils - or trans fats - from the shelves of its 75 stores. Trans fats have been proven to be connected to various ailments related to heart disease; the National Academy of Sciences has determined that there is no safe level of trans fats in the diet.
The move beats by two years the 2006 deadline given by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to food manufacturers to label the amount of trans fats in their products.
