A new report by IHL Consulting Group, IT and the North American Supermarket, suggests that major supermarket chains are likely to spend heavily over the next 24 months on technology systems such as self-checkout, point-of-sale- hardware, and new mobile devices that will integrate "real-time
information exchange with in-store POS systems."

"Retailers have been delaying store-level technology purchases for the last three years," said IHL president Greg Buzek. "A great deal of this equipment is now is 12 to 14 years old…the point has come where retailers are being forced to replace their equipment and plan to do so at an accelerated pace."

The company defines major supermarket chains as those doing $1 billion or more a year in sales.
