The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) said yesterday that the federal government should begin regulating the meaning of "low-carb," agreeing with the recommendation made last week by the Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA).
CSPI said that the FDA should regulate implied low-carb claims and ban the use of the term "net carbs" in marketing. It also wants companies to post the phrase "not a low-calorie food" next to carb claims.
Manufacturers get "net carbs" or "impact carbs" by subtracting fiber, sugar alcohols, and other carbs that have "minimal impact on blood sugar," CSPI said.
