Following on yesterday's report that the online US grocery industry should reach $8.8 billion in sales in 2004, up from $200 million just five years ago, with an annual growth rate of close to 20 percent annually over the next four or five years, MyWebGrocer announced that it is looking at weekly same-store sales gains of 40 percent year-over-year.

"This January has been particularly strong because of strong winter storm conditions across the mid-west and the Atlantic coastal states," said Mike Spindler, president of MyWebGrocer. "We have supermarkets across the country, but many of our clients, such as Lowes Foods, Wakefern-ShopRite, Harris Teeter, Gristedes, and Farm Fresh are spread across the areas hit hard by this year’s winter."

The growth, according to Spindler, is coming from "both increased retention rates of current consumers and new online customers. In many cases the new customers are incremental to the supermarket’s customer base."
