business news in context, analysis with attitude

  • Amazon.com posted fourth-quarter net profit up to $73.2 million, from $2.7 million in the year-ago period. Quarterly revenues jumped 36 percent to a better-than-expected $1.95 billion from $1.43 billion a year ago.

The strong fourth-quarter results were enough to make 2003 Amazon's first profitable year ever.

  • New York City-based online grocer FreshDirect reportedly has become profitable after just a year in business, doing more than $2 million a week in sales.

However, despite the profitability, co-chairman and CEO Joe Fedele is stepping down from the CEO job. Day-to-day responsibilities will be handled by Jason Ackerman, president, and COO Dean Furbush.
