Bloomberg reports that four thousand deli, meat and seafood workers in New York City and Long Island have authorized their United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union to call a strike of six supermarket chains - Stop & Shop, Pathmark, Waldbaums, A&P, King Kullen and ShopRite.

The employees' contract expired last Friday.

The UFCW says that health care costs are the primary bone of contention.
