The Boston Globe reports that these seems to be a simple reason that while 22 percent of Americans qualify as obese, only seven percent of French citizens are similarly described.

While American restaurants often brag about big portions, Parisian restaurants use "small" and "skimpy" portions as a selling point. And the same goes for portion sizes available in the respective supermarkets of America and Paris.
