Yesterday, MNB reported that an uproar is taking place in France over a proposed nickel-a-bottle tax on wine that has been proposed by the government to close a billion-dollar budget deficit. The opposition says that such a move would hurt a wine industry already in trouble because of decreasing consumption.

Well, wine drinkers and vintners don't have to worry. The government announced yesterday that there will be no tax increase on wine.

Bowing, no doubt, to the extreme public pressure put on the government after the MNB piece appeared yesterday morning.
