  • Costco Wholesale Corp. posted total sales for the four-week period ended August 31 of $3.4 billion, up 13 percent from $3.02 billion during the same period last year. Same-store sales for the period were up nine percent.

    For the 16-week fiscal fourth quarter ended August 31, 2003, Costco reported net sales of $13.42 billion, an increase of 11 percent from $12.05 billion during last year's fiscal fourth quarter.

    For the fiscal year ended August 31, 2003, Costco reported net sales of $41.70 billion, an increase of 10 percent from $37.99 billion during the prior fiscal year.



  • Walgreen Co. reported a 9.6 percent increase in August same-store sales, and said that total sales rose 14.0 percent to $2.8 billion in the month.

    August pharmacy sales increased 16.5 percent, while same-store pharmacy sales rose 12.6 percent. Non-pharmacy, or front-end sales, rose 5.0 percent during the period.



  • CVS Corp. reported that its August same-store sales rose 6.4 percent, as total sales for the month rose 8.4 percent, to $1.96 billion.

    Pharmacy same-store sales rose 8.7 percent.



  • H.J. Heinz Co. reported that first quarter sales from continuing operations rose 3.1 percent to $1.90 billion, helped by foreign exchange translation rates. The company said that it earned $214.0 million in the first quarter, compared with $100.0 million in the year-earlier period.
