business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Jacksonville Times-Union reports that Winn-Dixie Stores will eliminate "an unspecified number of positions from its Jacksonville headquarters and division offices."

"In response to a sluggish economy and slow sales ... we found it necessary to reduce our headquarters and support function staff," Joanne Gage, the Winn-Dixie's vice president of advertising and marketing, said in a written statement. "Deciding to eliminate positions was not a step we took lightly, but we are firmly committed to the profitability of this company."

The cuts are slated to reduce administrative employees by 10 percent, through a combination of layoffs and attrition.
