- Safeway Inc. has joined the club of retailers in the US that have said they will cash federal government tax rebate checks at no charge. The government will begin sending rebate checks to more than 25 million taxpayers on July 25.
- A new study suggests that a low-fat vegetarian diet may be able to cut cholesterol about as effectively as the popular statin drugs currently used by millions of people.
However, the study was a limited one, taking just one month and involving 46 people.
It was funded in part by the Canadian government and the Almond Board of California and was published in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.
