business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Guardian in the UK reports that because British regulatory authorities have said that stock analysts will be restricted in their coverage of supermarket stocks after August 1, there is speculation that the Competition Commission soon will recommend which chains will be allowed to bid for Safeway Plc.

Among the contenders: Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, William Morrison Supermarkets, and retail magnate Philip Green.

The commission was scheduled to submit its recommendation by August 12, with a final ruling from the government expected in September. If a recommendations comes through by August 1, it appears likely that a ruling could come by the end of the month.
