USAToday reports this morning that it seems likely that the United States will not drop its ban on Canadian beef, instituted after a single cow north of the border was found to have mad cow disease, anytime soon.
While Canada has been losing an estimated $20 million a day since the US ban, the bigger problem is Japan - which has threatened to bar purchases of American beef as of September 1 if it is not assured that there is no way that banned Canadian beef can find its way into US beef exports.
Japan is the largest single buyer of US beef.
