The day after UK regulators said that both retailers had to be investigated before they could bid to acquire Safeway Plc, both Wal-Mart and William Morrison say they remain committed to buying the UK’s fourth biggest food retailer.

"We have a strong case for being allowed to buy Safeway, which we will pursue vigorously," said CEO Tony DeNunzio of Wal-Mart’s Asda Group told Reuters.

Morrison’s chairman Ken Morrison said in a statement, “Only Morrison's can provide a strong fourth national food retailer in the UK, and we remain fully committed to vigorously pursuing our interest in Safeway.”
