CIES – The Food Business Forum has published the results of its 2003 “Top Of Mind” survey, illustrating an interesting discrepancy in how retailers and manufacturers perceive business priorities and issues.
For the retailers surveyed, Customer loyalty and retention has jumped into the top position, moving up from number two in last year’s survey, Food safety and security, number one a year ago, has dropped to number two.
“Formats, services and assortment” maintained its third ranked position for retailers.
Manufacturers, on the other hand, tell CIES that their priorities have remained the same from last year: Internationalization of food retailing is their number one concern, followed by customer loyalty and retention, and then food safety and security.
Manufacturers see “formats, services and assortment” as a seventh on their list of priorities, while “internationalization” is number six for retailers.

We can’t help but think that retailers ought to be giving more emphasis to issues like “the retailer as brand” and “public image” and accountability.”
These go right to the core of what a retailer is…and yet retailers in this survey seem to think that technical standards and recession are more important.
We’d disagree.
