Belgian supermarket retailer Delhaize Freres et Compagnie le Lion SA said it will close 41 underperforming Food Lion stores and one Kash n' Karry unit in the US as a response to weak sales growth here, in part because of the economy and in part because of heightened competition.
The closings are to happen by the end of the month.
Food Lion has 1,228 Food Lion stores in 11 states and 138 Kash n' Karry stores in Florida.
Food Lion reportedly also will streamline its infrastructure to save money.
