In the latest of what is becoming an almost daily drumbeat of announcements, Iowa-based Hy-Vee Supermarkets has announced that it will begin selling irradiated ground beef in five packages: 85- and 90-percent lean tray packs, 85- and 90-percent lean rolls and 93-percent lean patties.
“We are excited to offer our Hy-Vee customers a choice of purchasing SureBeam processed fresh ground beef because we strongly believe that it's the best technology in making fresh food as safe as possible,” said Ray Stewart, Executive Vice President, Perishables for Hy-Vee. “The time is right for us to offer this choice to consumers.”
The process being used by Hy-Vee is the SureBeam electron beam technology, which uses electricity to eliminate the threat of dangerous bacteria from food products.

- The question isn’t whether another retailer will announce that it will sell irradiated beef. It’s which company will make the announcement.
